Rowing Machine versus Elliptical Cross Trainer

The elliptical cross trainer is one of the newer types of fitness machine on the scene. They replicate a Nordic Skiing action and work both the upper and lower body. But is it a better option than a rowing machine?

Rowing Machine

rowing machine reviews
A rowing machine is a good choice if:-
  • Your budget is limited
  • You don't have much space
  • You want to work your whole body
  • You enjoy the rowing action
  • Want to improve your cardio-vascular system
  • You're very over weight

Advantages:
  • You can get into a shape on a budget.
  • Takes up little space
  • Most models fold away for easy storage
  • Works your whole body
  • Improve cardio-vascular fitness
  • Most models are quieter than treadmills
  • Don't require power supply
  • Vigorous rowing burns up to 850 calories/ hour
  • Low impact form of exercise

Disadvantages:
  • Some find rowing dull and won't be motivated
  • Budget models can be unreliable

Elliptical Cross Trainer

An elliptical trainer is a good option if:-
  • You're presently very over weight
  • You're recovering from an injury
  • You have joint problems
  • You don't like running or cycling
  • You want to work upper and lower body
  • You want to improve your aerobic fitness

Advantages:
  • Good for those new to exercise
  • Places very little stress on your joints
  • Will tone your legs, bum and upper body
  • You can get a good trainer for under $500
  • Great for rehabilitation
  • Can be used with or without arms
  • Very low risk of injury
  • Good for cardio fitness - although not as good as a rowing machine

Disadvantages:
  • Takes up more space than an exercise bike
  • Some find the action dull
  • Budget models have a shorter stride length that will limit the benefits.
Both a rowing machine and elliptical cross trainer work the upper and lower body. A rower takes up less space and will fold away smaller for storage. An elliptical trainer can take up to a lot of space, even the folding models require more room than a rower. The rower will burn more calories than a trainer so if its weight loss and fitness then maybe a rower is better.

However, if you're planning on watching TV whilst training an elliptical would be better as there is far less movement involved. If you decide a rower is best for you please check out our reviews to find the best model for your needs.
