Rowing Machine Maintenance
t's that dreaded M-word. Let's face it, you buy your machine to keep fit and not to get your hands dirty :0) But with most models you shouldn't have to spend too much time with a screwdriver and spanner in your hand - and the few moments you spend on maintenance and checks, will pay back in the long run.
A clue to what can go wrong is in the warranty. For example, whilst most frame are guaranteed for two or three years, or maybe for it's lifetime, moving parts may be for as little as 6 to 12 months only. Keep in mind - a rower that's looked after will give you many years of trouble-free service, so it's worth it! Another simple precautions you can take is to get a shock-absorbant mat to place under your machine. |
Good Practice:-

A few precautions can go a long way to maximize the life of your machine:-
- Use a non-slip, impact resistant mat underneath - it will protect your floor also.
- Always use on a flat surface.
- Ensure you have plenty of space for both you and the rower.
- Don't let anyone exceeding the manufacturer's recommended weight limit use the machine - it could damage your machine and if they find out it will invalidate your warranty.
- And it's worth mentioning, that you should store your rower in a dry room to prevent corrosion. We once had an email from someone complaining about the state of their machine, only to find they kept it in the laundry room!
Regular checks:-
Before a training session, always give your machine a quick once over. Here's a checklist:-
Before a training session, always give your machine a quick once over. Here's a checklist:-
- Slide the seat up and down the rail with your hand - does it feel smooth? Any clicks or unusual sounds? If it 'bumps' or the rollers click, wipe down the rails and clean the seat rollers.
- Shake the seat - does it feel secure, or does it wobble on its mounting? Fix by tightening the screws on the seat housing.
- Look out for loose screws, wires (i.e. console connections, seat) and support legs.
- Check the handle is connected securely to the chain/ chord - you really don't want it to come off in the middle of a stroke!
- If you own a hydraulic machine, check for leaks on the cylinders - you may notice a change in the action of the machine if one is leaking fluid.
- And finally, check nothing is under your machine, or too close to knock when you start training.
Should your machine start to make an unusual noise, or the action suddenly changes - stop immediately and run over the checks above. Should any part have failed or broken, consult the manual and contact the supplier where appropriate.
Monthly Maintenance:-
Depending on how much you use your machine (check the manufacturer's guide for more advice), you may need to do the following once a month, or every two months.Apply the manufacturer's recommended oil to moving parts including the chain (again refer to the manual).
Water-Resistant Rowers:-
Pretty simple, but if you own a water resistant rower, please remember to change the water, or add the powder/ water purification tables recommended by the manufacturer to prevent algae and other interesting lifeforms growing in your tank!
So you don't need to be an experienced mechanic to care for your rower.
Most maintenance involves a duster, cleaning fluid and a screwdriver. But always refer to the manual if in doubt. Some parts should not be dis-assembled because it will invalidate your warranty. If in doubt, contact your supplier.
Happy rowing!

- Check and tighten all screws.
- Wipe down the frame and slide with a household cleaner - dust can impair the smooth function of a rower.
- Check for wear and tear on all moveable parts - replace any that look worn or damaged.
- Check the chain (attached to the handle) is well lubricated and use only lubricants recommended by the manufacturer. Note, this isn't applicable to models that use a fabric or plastic line.
