Velocity Vantage Rowing Machine Review

Our first thought when we saw the Velocity Vantage rowing machine is that it looks a like the VR400 from BodyCraft, in fact, we guess it's based on the same frame. But the different performance monitor and a few other features make this a slightly better machine in our view.

Although looks aren't everything, it does help if you have a great looking machine as it can tempt you to use it more - and this is a positive when it comes to fitness equipment. And the Vantage is certainly a looker. And it also feels good! It's high rail and seat position give it a commercial machine rowing position. The seat sits at 19.5 inches from the floor which is great is you're tall, but also saves your knees after a tough workout for any height.

The seat is one of the most unusual we've come across, but its molded seat certainly worked for us. It has a satisfyingly soft surface that makes for a very comfortable ride. The thick handle has adequate padded, but we think a more oval cross-section would be better than the round one used. But this is a minor point and most will not find it an issue.

The Vantage uses a combination of air and magnetic resistance for the flywheel which delivers a smooth and very quiet action. The sixteen levels provide a wide enough range for all types of workouts - many of the pre-set programs automatically adjust the resistance level depending on the goals for each program. This is a great feature in our view. For example, the monitor can increase or decrease the resistance based on input from the built-in heart rate monitor (chest belt no supplied) to keep you in the fat-burning zone for the best results from your session.

One feature we're not so sure about is the use of a nylon strap for the handle. Yes, it does help to keep the noise down compared to a more conventional chain you'll see on commercial machines, but how long will it last before it needs replacing? We guess time will tell - we'll update this review when we get feedback from owners of the Vantage.

This is a folding rowing machine, so when you're done rowing, it folds up quickly and is easy to move by tilting it onto the four transport wheels. But one thing, due to the design it still has a fairly big footprint when folded - check the dimensions below.

The Display / Computer
Wow - it certainly looks the part! This is quite an impressive monitor with built-in heart rate monitor for the five heart rate programs that are part of a great selection of pre-set programs.

The large, LCD back lit screen is adjustable and easy to read. The layout is well designed and fairly straight forward to use. Other programs include one of our favorites - a race boat - where you can compete against an imaginary opponent which can be set using one of your previous performances. This is a great motivator and encourages progress.
Another good feature is the monitor allows five user profiles. So if more than one member of your household is going to use the rowing machine, you can record your performances separately. However, it is not PC-compatible like the Concept2s or has an online facility such as a number of the quality models now offer.

Summary:

An impressive rowing machine at a good price. It's quiet, smooth and has a great feel, but the big plus is the hi-tech, feature-packed performance monitor. The inclusion of the pre-set heart rate and race boat programs make this model definitely worth serious consideration.
It may not be a well know brand like Concept2 or WaterRower, but this solid machine has some great features that make it well worth checking out.

Also worth a look:
There are a number of worthy competitors to the Velocity Vantage for around the same price tag, or a little extra. These include the constant best sellers from Concept2 - the Model D or Model E (also an air resistance rowers). If you're more inclined to a water/ fluid resistance machine you could take a look at the WaterRower Natural.
